Just four miles south of Doolin are the majestic Cliffs of Moher, battling daily with the Atlantic ocean. They rise in places to over 700 feet. A visitor centre is open all year round. Four miles east of Doolin is Lisdoonvarna, Ireland’s only Spa town.

Doolin is on the fringe of the world famous Burren, a remarkable limestone area which has a combination of many visual features that make it unique in Europe. Its geology, flora, caves, archaeology and history set it apart as a place of mystery and beauty – an explorers dream. The Burren Display Centre in Kilfenora helps unravel many of the Burren’s mysteries. Aillwee Cave

Aillwee Cave, Ballyvaughan, discovered in Jack McCann, a local farmer, in 1944, the 1000 feet long cave is one of the oldest of the Burren Caves having formed millions of years ago. Guided tours, lasting 30 minutes, allow you to observe beautiful caverns, bridged chasms, underground waterfalls, weird mineral formations and the hibernation chambers of brown bears which have been extinct in Ireland for centuries. Facilities include a restaurant, craft shop, information desk and outside, 'The Hazelwood' crafts village.

Horse Riding in Doolin

There are a number of Horse Riding Centres accessible from Atlantic Sunset House which offer a range of treks for both beginners and more experienced riders. You can choose from treks on the Burren offering spectacular views of the Atlantic Ocean and the Aran Islands, or closer to the sea at Doolin or in Lahinch. Contact the Mountain View Riding Centre or the Willie Daly Riding Centre locally. Killaloe Heritage

Killaloe Heritage Centre combines the old and the new in an exhibition tracing the history of Killaloe, Capital of Ireland 1002-1014. The visitor information centre provides a full range of services, including reservations for cruiser hire, nightly mediaeval banquet feasts, etc.

Bunratty Folk Park

The folk park in the castle grounds gives visitors a glimpse of traditional lifestyles in the Shannon region. It features a complete reconstruction of a 19th century village street, including craft shops, general stores and post office. There are examples of houses representing a variety of districts from west Clare to the rich farmlands of Limerick. The Cliffs of Moher

The Cliffs of Moher stretch for 8km & rise up to 214 metres above the Atlantic Ocean. For information on the new interpretive centre ATLANTIC EDGE is the exciting interpretive centre now open at the Cliffs of Moher New Visitor Experience. Housed at the centre of the underground building a huge domed cave contains images, exhibits, displays & experiences that will delight young and old alike.

Beaches

There is nothing more refreshing and invigorating than a walk along the ocean, with the winds sweeping in from the Atlantic. Clare with its long and rugged coastline has a variety of uncrowded beaches or safe sandy coves for the walker. Kilkee and Lahinch are the two premier seaside resorts with magnificent golden beaches and numerous attractions to suit all ages. Bishop's Quarter at Ballyvaughan, Fanore, White Strand and Spanish Point are other main beaches. Continuing south along the Clare coast, in addition to Kilkee, Seafield at Quilty and the White Strands at Doonbeg are ideal for walking.

Dolphin Watching

Ireland's only resident group of over 100 bottlenose dolphins live in the Shannon Estuary. The magnificent dolphins can be observed, on most days, feeding, travelling and playing. They can be viewed from the boats that undertake special tours and every encounter with the dolphins is different, determined by the dolphins themselves. Boats operate from Dolphin Watch, Carrigaholt Pier and Kilrush Creek Marina througout the summer. (The trips last approximately 2 hours)

Visiting the Islands

Historic Scattery Island, where St Senan founded a monastic settlement in the 6th century is less than 2 miles from Kilrush Marina. The Aran Islands are one of the last outposts of Gaelic civilisation where Irish is still the spoken language are 30 minutes by Ferry from Doolin. Travel to Holy Island (Inis Cealtra), one of Ireland's most famous monastic sites, from Mountshannon. Its many attractions include a well preserved Round Tower, the ruins of 6 churches and an extraorinary cell like structure.
